Local Musicians to Compete at National Women’s Music Festival
by News
Two local musical acts — The Sirens and Teneia Sanders — will go head to head with about six other acts this July at The National Women’s Music
Festival in Madison, WI.
The groups, which are avid attendees of FDL events, competed earlier this month in Indianapolis for this honor. Sanders took the top spot at that regional level while The Sirens came in as runners up. Both, however, will be competing at the national level.
Headdy Mays, lead singer of the Sirens (which are pictured), said the honor is awesome.
“We’re grateful to be a part of something bigger than ourselves,” Mays said. “We’ve worked really, really hard and we’re trying to bring something to women’s music that is different and exciting and sexy and rowdy as hell.”
And Sanders agrees (pictured right).
“This opportunity means alot to me,” she said. “I feel as though my time has come to shine on like a Crazy diamond.”
The National Women’s Music Festival is a four-day event that celebrates the music and culture of women. There is a wide range of workshops and concerts. The event is in its 34th year and is July 2-5.
There were five regional competitions held across the country in places such as Indianapolis to glean competitors for the national event.Sanders and The Sirens competed in Indianapolis. The event there was sponsored by IndyIndie — an organization that promotes the work of female independent artists.
The winners of this year’s competition at the national level will win a place on next year’s bill of performers. That means they will score a place on the main stage and get paid, Mays said.
The festival has attracted such performers at Melissa Ferrick, Sweet Honey in the Rock and Betty.
